Terry Family Fall Photos at Riverdale Park | Northern Utah Family Photographer

This is my second season photographing the Terry family. Last year we did photos in the freezing cold in Ogden at the end of Fall which you can view here. Thankfully this year we had such a perfect day for photos. There was a bit of a cool crispness to the air but it was warm enough for some light sweaters and everyone could be comfortable. Since the weather was on outside it was much easier to get the kids playing and smiling so we could not have asked for a better session. This was my first time shooting at this location and first time shooting in Riverdale and let me just say, it certainly won’t be my last! One of the pro’s is its a big park with trails, a steam, walking paths, a bike park, and a Frisbee golf course. And if you like trains, there is an awesome view of trains that sit or drive by, which kid wouldn’t enjoy that?

I hope you enjoy these photos and the beautiful smiles of this family at this super cute and beautiful park in Riverdale, right before entering Ogden.

🍁 Fall Family of Six Photoshoot in Riverdale, Utah

If you’ve ever dreamed of capturing your family surrounded by glowing fall colors, there’s no better place than Riverdale, Utah. Nestled along the Weber River, this charming city comes alive in autumn — golden trees, crisp mountain air, and the perfect backdrop for timeless family portraits.

Recently, I had the joy of photographing a family of six during peak fall color season in Riverdale, and the results were nothing short of magical. Whether you’re planning your own session or simply love seeing family photos that radiate warmth and connection, here’s everything you need to know about a fall family photoshoot in Riverdale, Utah.

🍂 Why Riverdale, Utah Is Perfect for Fall Family Photos

Riverdale might be small, but it’s full of hidden photography gems. The Weber River Parkway Trail, local parks, and quiet tree-lined streets create a variety of natural backdrops — all within minutes of each other.

  • Vibrant fall foliage: Reds, oranges, and golds pop beautifully in photos.

  • Easy access: Riverdale’s parks and trails are stroller-friendly and ideal for large families.

  • Golden hour perfection: The mountain light just before sunset gives skin tones a warm, natural glow.

  • Peaceful atmosphere: You’ll rarely have to deal with crowds, making it perfect for young kids who need room to play.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A Family of Six — Posing & Candid Moments

Photographing a family of six means finding balance — both in the composition and in the energy of the shoot. During this Riverdale fall photoshoot, we focused on connection and authenticity:

  • Group portraits first: With four kids, getting the “everyone smiling” shot is priority number one! We used the trees along the Weber River Parkway as a soft, colorful backdrop.

  • Break into smaller groups: Parents with kids, siblings together, then individual portraits — this keeps the energy light and fun.

  • Candid moments: Some of the best shots came while the kids tossed leaves and ran down the trail laughing. Those natural moments always make the session unforgettable.

👗 What to Wear for a Fall Family Photoshoot

Coordinating outfits for six people can feel overwhelming, but with the right palette, your photos will look cohesive and timeless.

Color Palette Ideas for Fall in Riverdale:

  • Deep burgundy, rust, mustard, olive green, cream, and navy.

  • Mix textures like knits, flannels, denim, and corduroy.

  • Keep patterns minimal — think subtle plaids or florals.

Pro Tip: Avoid everyone wearing the same color. Instead, choose three main tones that complement each other and scatter them across the family for balance.

📸 Favorite Locations for Fall Photos in Riverdale

  1. Weber River Parkway Trail — Stunning riverside light, tall grasses, and colorful trees.

  2. Riverdale Park — Great for families with young children; wide open space and playgrounds for breaks.

  3. Quiet neighborhood streets — Perfect for that cozy “home-town” vibe with glowing trees in the background.

  4. Open fields near the river — Soft, golden grass adds warmth and texture to family portraits.

Each of these Riverdale locations gives a slightly different mood — from playful to romantic — while keeping everything within a short drive.

🍁 Tips for a Successful Family Photoshoot

  • Plan for early October when the fall colors peak.

  • Schedule around golden hour (about 60–90 minutes before sunset).

  • Bring light snacks or hand warmers for the kids.

  • Keep it relaxed. The best photos happen when families interact naturally — laughing, hugging, playing.

❤️ Why These Photos Matter

Family photos are more than just pictures — they’re memories frozen in time. With four kids growing fast, the Terry family in Riverdale wanted to document not just faces, but personalities — the way their oldest helped the youngest with her shoes, the way mom and dad laughed when leaves flew everywhere.

These small moments become priceless reminders of what family feels like: full, beautiful, and perfectly imperfect.
